Your United Way of Porter County stands together with nonprofits in our community to give passionate volunteers the opportunity to learn through service. Beth, an AmeriCorps member, recently shared her inspiring United Way story.
For the past three years, Beth has volunteered at Reins of Life in Michigan City. The Reins of Life Therapeutic Horseback Riding program offers activities that allow students to grow their social skills and increase balance and coordination.
Together with her two daughters, Beth helps children and adults who may not be able to communicate verbally to participate in the programs.
Beth recalled a particular instance of a non-verbal girl who participated in riding therapy. Instead of issuing the horse verbal commands, the girl would simply tap the horse's neck. Then, after three years of riding therapy, Beth asked the girl a question and she responded softly.
Through AmeriCorps, Beth has gained skills that she can share with her coworkers and her community, such as fundraising, first aid, financial literacy and more.
Beth is currently completing an AmeriCorps term as the Special Programs Director at Reins of Life. Read more about Beth's special United Way story on our website, unitedwaypc.org/Post/AmeriCorps-Member-Beth?utm_source=June+Quarterly+2019&utm_campaign=2019-03_quarterly-newsletter&utm_medium=email
