Three-time Grammy® nominated children’s musician Justin Roberts and his five-piece band, the Not Ready for Naptime Players, will perform two shows – at 10 am and 12:30 pm - on Saturday September 21, at Marriott Theatre, 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire, IL 60069.
An “all-star” of the indie family music scene, Justin Roberts has been creating the soundtrack to families’ lives for over 20 years. His devoted fan base enjoys classics like the fist-pumping “Pop Fly” and parent favorite “Stay-At-Home Dad” with its very own ‘80s pop anthem song break. It’s unexpectedly intelligent and whimsically rocking music for kids!
Though Roberts has had a successful career for over two decades, he knows that inside every one of us there is a mini rocker waiting to come out. You don’t have to have fancy instruments or a pitch-perfect voice to make it happen - just a shoebox, some rubber bands, a little elbow grease, and you’re on your way! With his latest concert program, BE YOUR OWN BAND, Justin and his amazing band the Not Ready for Naptime Players will get kids started on their own rock journey by making simple homemade instruments out of everyday objects, right there on stage.
The 60-minute concert will include an ample serving of Roberts’s fun, interactive, and highly sophisticated songs, performed with his five-piece band accompanying him on bass, drums, electric guitar, trumpet, melodica, keyboard, acoustic guitar, ukulele, harmonica and more. They may even be joined by Justin's hilarious puppet friends, Willy the Whale, Tim, and Little Dave, helping to guide the audience through the fun.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Two-time GRAMMY Nominee Justin Roberts is truly one of the “all-stars” of the indie family music scene. For nearly 20 years, Roberts has been creating the soundtrack to families’ lives, crafting songs that navigate the joys and sorrows of growing up. Justin and his band, The Not Ready for Naptime Players, have travelled the globe, from Hong Kong to New York, and Miami to Seattle.
Roberts began his music career in the 1990s, performing in the Minneapolis-based indie-rock band Pimentos for Gus. He decided to “moonlight” as a Montessori preschool teacher, and it wasn’t long before Justin began writing and singing songs for a new generation of fans: his students. The kids immediately responded and inspired Justin to record some of his new songs and send them out to a few friends for Christmas. One of the gift recipients was Liam Davis, a college pal and music producer, who suggested that they record the songs professionally.
In 1997, Justin released his first family CD, GREAT BIG SUN, and the critics took note. Justin’s music was soon being compared to everyone from Elvis Costello and Fountains of Wayne to Paul Simon, ELO and Nick Lowe. Justin hit the road full time doing what he loves most: playing music for appreciative crowds. Kiddie mosh pits broke out, word spread and shows started selling out.
Justin has performed in front of millions of people on The Today Show, he’s been featured on Nick Jr. TV, and his song “Get Me Some Glasses” was on a World Series broadcast. He’s received three GRAMMY nominations: for JUNGLE GYM in 2011, RECESS in 2014 and LEMONADE in 2018. Recent appearances include performances at NYC’s New Victory Theater, DC’s National Geographic Live, LA’s Getty Museum, Seattle’s Moore Theater, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Chicago’s Ravinia.
