Although it’s not my favorite sound, I did enjoy Midwest Big Band presents “The Sounds of Sinatra and the Unforgettable Ladies of Song” at Theatre at the Center. My friend Helen, on the other hand, absolutely loved the show.
**** Highly Recommended If MOMIX Alice returns to Chicago in the future, run don’t walk to the box office for tickets! Yes, it’s that good! Think psychedelic Cirque du Soleil meets Alice in Wonderland meets Grace Slick, if you can imagine that. If not, you’ll have to see it yourself! 4 BIG Spotlights
**** Highly Recommended Goodman Theatre’s lyrical production of "Joe Turner’s Come and Gone" is a masterpiece – and a history lesson. In this play, the second in August Wilson’s Century Cycle, set in the 1910s, echoes of the Civil War overlay the ordinary difficulties of everyday life. As in most of Wilson’s Pittsburgh cycle, the characters are dealing with life the best they can – but because it’s Wilson, there’s a bit of mysticism too. Kudos to the cast, the acting is absolutely superb! 4 Spotlights
The RailCats were giving the ball to their left-handed pitcher, Chris Erwin, for his first appearance since August against the same team, the Chicago Dogs. The 'Cats were shut out the day before and were looking to tie the series and force a rubber match to close out the opening series.
Chicago Fire FC (2-6-4, 10 points) fell 3-1 to St. Louis CITY SC (3-1-7, 16 points) on Saturday night at CITYPARK.
The Fire found the back of the net in the 46th minute when forward Hugo Cuypers scored his third goal of the season. Midfielder Chris Mueller carried the ball up the right flank, sending a cross to the far side of the box. Defender Andrew Gutman met the pass in the air, heading it to the top of the six where Cuypers stretched to half-volley it into the net.
The Schaumburg Boomers moved to 2-0 on the young season by coming from behind in nearly identical fashion for a second straight night to knock off the Washington Wild Things 6-3 on the road Saturday.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Haven Chicago, after over a decade of championing and emboldening visionary and next-generation artists, it is with sadness that we announce that Haven Chicago will be ceasing operations as a producing organization at the end of the current season. We are also filled with immense joy and celebration to be completing our time with a true full-circle final production, with a new take on Haven's very first show, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, directed by an alumnus of the very first Director's Haven, JD Caudill.
