BIRD OF PREY JAMBOREE

Saturday, May 4th  *  9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Indiana Welcome Center

7770 Corinne Drive (I-80/94 & Kennedy South), Hammond

Birds of prey serve as some of the top predators in our ecosystem. These majestic species serve a vital role in our environment but are often negatively impacted by human development. Meet the bird of prey ambassadors of Humane Indiana to learn about different species of hawks, owls, and falcons in Northwest Indiana and how we can work to protect their species. Attendees can also hear from local experts, shop the vendor marketplace, and stop by the kids’ activity area!

ARYA - A one-year-old female Barred Owl rescued from LaPorte County after her nest tree came down in a storm when she and her sibling were less than a week old. After being rescued, Arya and her brother Dougal were kept by a public member for over a week, which unfortunately resulted in imprinting on people. As a result, they could not be returned to the wild and now serve as ambassadors to their species at our facility. Arya accompanies staff to education programs while her brother remains at the center and acts as a surrogate parent for orphaned Barred Owl chicks.

POMONA - Pomona, the Peregrine Falcon, was admitted to our center in June of 2019 after being rescued from the county city building in South Bend, IN. Bird monitoring volunteers witnessed her strike the side of the building and immediately jumped into action to rescue her. At Arbor View Animal Hospital, X-rays revealed fluid around her heart, ruptured air sacs, a cracked cere, and a fractured keel. Once heeled, staff noticed that Pomona struggled to successfully land on perches and frequently collided with objects. A trip to the Purdue Avian Ophthalmologist revealed a genetic eye issue that impaired Pomona's vision, rendering her non-releasable.

PHOENIX - Phoenix, the Red-tailed Hawk, has been with HIW since 2015 after being found in South Bend unable to fly. She was later diagnosed with West Nile and has sustained permanent feather damage. Because of West Nile, her primary flight feathers on her right wing are too short, preventing her from getting the lift needed to get off the ground.

CINNA & ARLENE - Our Eastern Screech Owl ambassadors, Cinna and Arlene, hail from St. Joseph County (Cinna) and Lake County (Arlene) after they were both struck by vehicles. Due to their eye injuries, neither of them was able to be returned to the wild. As ambassadors for their species, they accompany the staff to outreach programs throughout our community and act as surrogates for orphaned Screech Owls admitted to our care. Since her admission in 2015, Cinna has helped raise over 50 orphaned Screech Owls!

OZZIE - A one-year-old Turkey Vulture rescued from Tippecanoe County after being found on the ground at a nursing home. He then spent several months with other orphaned Turkey Vultures at Wildcat Creek Wildlife Center in Delphi. Upon release, when other vultures headed south for migration, Ozzie remained and was able to be corralled back into an enclosure with minimal effort. Subsequent blood tests showed that Ozzie had previously contracted West Nile and had considerable feather damage. He was transferred to HIW in December of 2021 to be an ambassador for his species.
