Hospice Artisans
The Hospice Artisans group was formed in 2006 with the sole purpose of raising and donating monies to Hospice of the Calumet Area. It is the manner in which we have chosen to accomplish this goal that makes us unique in the non-profit world. We are recognized throughout our area and beyond for our high quality of work. Our artisans are all volunteers. Each individual has her/his own style but all share a passion and commitment to the hospice mission.
All items are handcrafted and individually made, thus no two are ever exactly alike. The artists are always moving forward and learning new techniques. We take classes, read trade journals, and when possible, visit museums and galleries for inspiration. Many have collected materials from all over the world. While we have many artisans who specialize in a specific area, we all share ideas with each other and are so happy to pass along our skills.
We come from broad and varied backgrounds. We are nurses, teachers, graphic designers, business and sales professionals, bankers, interior designers, librarians, an architect, a chemist, two master gardeners, social workers, health care professionals – to name just a few. Some have been in the art field for their entire careers. Others came with no experience at all. We have people who are retired, some who are still in school and others who are at the height of their professions. Our artisans range in age from 9 to – well –that is one secret we don’t share but let’s say 90 plus wouldn’t be a reason not to be an artisan!
One of the most rewarding aspects of The Hospice Artisans is to watch the growth of individuals who had never had any experience in the work we do. Some have said, “I have no talent”. But they were wrong! We have people who last sewed when they were children, people who learned to knit from their grandmothers, people who discovered a talent for sales that surprised them more than anyone else.
Several of our cards are featured in 1000 Greeting Cards, published in 2009. In 2012 The Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana recognized our group in the category of Team Innovation. After sending a journal to Queen Elizabeth II we received a letter of thanks from her Lady in Waiting!
The Artisans’ level of interest and commitment and the desire to present the highest quality products for the benefit of Hospice of the Calumet Area have led to an ever growing and ever changing line of items. As of 2020, we have raised over $650,000.
It seems long way from the day one of our artisans made some cards to sell for the benefit of Hospice. And then another came along - one who could knit. And another who could teach. And another who could sell. And on and on until today when we are over 65 strong – strong in creativity and strong in commitment.
We are also strong in our gratitude to all of the people who have supported our project and bought our goods. And now that we are online we are here to welcome YOU – our regular customers and YOU– our new customers.
So – here we go on our next adventure.
