AVON, Ohio — The Schaumburg Boomers dropped the first game of a six-game roadtrip, suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Lake Erie Crushers in a pitcher’s duel on Tuesday night in Ohio.
Lake Erie opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, receiving a two-out, two-run double from Hector Roa. Roa was involved the making the score 3-0 after crossing the plate on a two-out RBI single from Kenan Irizarry in the sixth. The Boomers struggled to put runners on base against Lake Erie starter Matt Mulhearn. The lone run for Schaumburg came in the top of the ninth on a solo homer from Gaige Howard, his fifth of the year.
The Boomers did not walk in the game, failing to draw a free pass for the first time this season as Mulhearn logged even innings for the Crushers. Jackson Hickert was the hard luck loser, slipping to 5-4 on the season despite a quality start. Hickert worked six innings and allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Cristian Lopez struck out three in two perfect innings of relief. Zach Huffins posted a pair of hits as the Boomers finished with seven.
The Boomers (45-33) continue the roadtrip with the second game against the Crushers tomorrow night at 6:05pm. RHP Austin Gossmann, claimed off waivers from Evansville, will make his Schaumburg debut opposite RHP Yasel Santana (3-6, 4.71). The team still has nine home dates left on the schedule.
