Boy Scout Adam Lung of St. John, recently presented Community Hospital leadership with a customized red wagon. The donation, complete with an IV pole and safety belts to help transport pediatric patients, was his Eagle Project.

Lung fundraised and then designed the unique specifications for 15 wagons, which rolled into hospitals serving Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland pediatric patients.

“The wagons can reduce stress when used by children who want to have a little fun while being moved during their hospitalization,” the 17-year-old said of his research over the past several months. Lung hopes to study public health after graduating from Lake Central High School next year.

Community Hospital Pediatrics Unit Nurse Manager Tracy Sharp was grateful for the donation, which she said will bring happiness to the hospital’s youngest patients.

“Adam’s donation will certainly bring smiles to the faces of our pediatric patients,” Sharp said. “It will help relieve anxiety for them and also ease the minds of their parents.”

Community Hospital Chief Executive Officer Randy Neiswonger echoed Sharp’s sentiments.

“We are thrilled to accept this gift on behalf of our current and future pediatrics patients,” Neiswonger said of the donation. “It was a pleasure to meet Adam and learn about his engineering and design process. He certainly has a bright future.”

Community Hospital is one of four hospitals in Community Healthcare System nationally recognized for its outstanding quality of care through a full range of inpatient and outpatient programs and specialty service lines.
