
The stage of The Goodman Theatre in Chicago is currently aglow with a soaring production of “The Color Purple: The Musical.” The production runs through Aug. 3 at Goodman's Albert Theatre.
“The Color Purple: The Musical,” which is based on the book by Alice Walker and the 1985 film, is the sweeping story of main character Celie and the struggles of her life as she deals with abusive family relationships, teen pregnancy, racial injustice, poverty and inhumane treatment in all aspects of her life. Celie eventually triumphs over her struggles by the end of this stellar production.

Featuring a cast of 29 and directed by Lili-Anne Brown, “The Color Purple” is a rousing production that easily keeps an audience’s attention. Cast members offer powerful performances throughout the production. Brittney Mack, who stars as Celie, is a standout performer. Her vocals shine on every song she delivers.
Also offering excellent performances are Aerie Williams as Shug Avery, Nicole Michelle Haskins as Sofia, Evan Tyrone Martin as Mister and Shantel Renee Cribbs as Nettie.

“The Color Purple” features a number of praiseworthy musical numbers with exceptional choreography by Breon Arzell and music direction by Jermaine Hill.
Among outstanding musical numbers are “Mysterious Ways,” “Somebody Gonna Love You,” “Our Prayer,” “Too Beautiful for Words,” “I'm Here” and ”The Color Purple.”
This summer offering by The Goodman is one theater fans should rush out to secure a ticket for. It's definitely a winner.
