
The Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre at Noyes Cutural Center in Evanston recently opened its new season with the acclaimed play "Gee's Bend." The show continues to Sunday, June 7.
"Gee's Bend," by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder, traces the life of family members Alice, her daughters Nella and Sadie and Sadie's husband Macon over a more than 50-year span as they struggle with family and financial problems, racial tensions and more. Playwright Wilder's work debuted in 2008.
The strong cast of the production are experts at making theater attendees care about these characters. They all offer heartfelt performances. Starring in the show are Toccara Castleman, Kaitlyn Fields, Jasmine Robertson and Tyrone Norwood.

Theater fans who are familiar will the art of quilting will recognize the title of the play as the name of the town in Alabama which is known for its hand-stitched quilts created by the women of the town. Throughout the play, the art of quilting is showcased as character Sadie's quilts thrust her into a prominent artist spotlight.
Also featured in the production are segments from gospel songs which the women perform as they go about their day. The performers showcased rich vocals as they sang.

Wilder's play is a well-written work with interesting characters and poignant messages.
