Theatre at the Center in Munster was transformed into a Catholic school classroom on July 20, 2025, when Liz Cloud as “Sister” took the stage wearing the full habit of the old-school nun in the one-woman show, Late Nite Catechism. The show, celebrating its 32nd anniversary, was written by Vickie Quade and Maripat Donovan. This nostalgic comedy involves lots of audience interaction, so no two shows are the same.
Liz Cloud’s ability to improvise based on audience responses was amazing. Sister engaged “students” (audience members) by putting them through their paces answering Catechism questions. Students answering questions to Sister’s satisfaction were rewarded with items such as “Get Out of Hell Free” cards and glow-in-the-dark rosaries. Students who did not measure up were threatened with the ruler or put on guilt trips. Students with cell phones that went off during the performance were disciplined when Sister confiscated their cell phones.
Both people raised Catholic and non-Catholics got an insight into the Catholic culture. The play managed to be both respectful and irreverent at the same time. It was truly a heavenly-laugh-out-loud comedy!
At the end of the show, a collection was taken to help area retired nuns. Over the 32-year run of the show, over $3 million has been donated to help nuns with their retirement needs. The proceeds from this performance will be donated to the Albertine Home in Hammond, Indiana. (Sister returned students’ cell phones in the lobby after the show!)
