Residents may have recently noticed some new, red signs that have gone up in the areas of our schools. Building upon the success of both our Neighborhood (re-organized in 2005) and Business (implemented in 2007) Crime Watch Programs which now consist of thousands of active residents and hundreds of participating businesses, the Munster Police Department has now implemented its new Munster School Watch Program with the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
The Munster School Watch Program’s purpose is to promote safety on school grounds while encouraging staff, students, and parents to report suspicious or criminal activity when it is observed. In addition, the program will also include the following:
• Munster School Watch Program signage (as pictured right) will be posted around each of our public and parochial schools, encouraging individuals to call 911 if they observe suspicious activity
• Safety brochures will be made available where requested for parents or students to pick up on a variety of different safety topics
• Safety posters on topics such as bullying and reminders for students and staff to “see something, say something” will be posted in the hallways of the schools
• School staff members will receive a monthly newsletter from the Munster Police Department containing safety reminders throughout the school year
• In addition to our number of School Resource Officers and Community Oriented Policing Unit officers, other Munster Police officers are encouraged to continue to stop in at our schools or to drive through parking lots during their shifts to add additional police presence
This program was generously sponsored through a grant provided by the ROTARY CLUB OF MUNSTER. We would like to especially thank Linda Dunn for her leadership in working between the Rotary Club and our police department to secure funding for this important safety program. We greatly appreciate the Munster Rotarians for their continued support of many of our community policing programs.
