The Northwest Indiana Symphony and conductor Kirk Muspratt present “Carmen & Carmina,” one-night only, Friday, March 22 at 7:30 pm at the Auditorium at Living Hope Church. The concert will also feature the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus, David Taylor, violin; Alisa Jordheim, soprano, Thomas Aláan, counter-tenor; and Ian Rucker, baritone.
Carmina Burana is one of the most recognized and loved pieces in the choral repertoire. Orff’s masterwork is based on a collection of medieval poems that examine the universal themes of the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return of Spring, and the pleasures and perils of love and celebration. Guest soloists will join with the Symphony Chorus for this concert showstopper.
Chicago Symphony Orchestra Assistant Concertmaster David Taylor will perform Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy. This virtuoso violin work is based on Bizet’s opera Carmen.
“David is one of the greatest, exciting, Chicago violinists of all time performing one of the hardest violin pieces,” Maestro Muspratt said. “Then Carmina Burana is one of the greatest, exciting, choral masterpieces of all time! You will be blown away on this concert!”
Maestro Muspratt will host a pre-concert discussion before the concert beginning at 6:15 pm to talk about the history and nuance of the pieces to be performed. The guest artists will also join the discussion. This talk is free to all ticket holders.
Tickets for the concert range from $40 -$75 each and students are $10. GROUP SALES ARE AVAILABLE AT A DISCOUNT. Call the Symphony office at (219) 836-0525 or visit the website at www.NISOrchestra.org to order tickets for Carmen & Carmina!
