The first week of 2026 brought bundles of joy to the acute care hospitals of Powers Health – Community Hospital in Munster; St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago; and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
Arriving first in the new year at Powers Health was Evannah Diaz, born at 12 a.m. Jan. 1 at St. Mary Medical Center to parents Rocio Reyes-Zermeno and Eduardo Diaz.
Community Hospital’s first baby of 2026 arrived a few minutes later at 12:18 a.m. Jan. 1. A baby boy named Ahmad Aly was born to parents Nibal Abdelsalam and Mohamed Aly.
Later that morning, St. Catherine Hospital welcomed its first baby of the new year. Jamela Kaylani Rodriguez Smith was born at 9:10 a.m. Jan. 1 to Juliana Rodriguez and Kayson Smith.
