Vibrant, new public art is coming to Michigan Boulevard this summer in the form of a mural along the retaining walls in the 900 block of the thoroughfare. Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) is facilitating the painting, donated by Hitachi Global Air Power, in honor of Sullair's 60th anniversary.
"The arts add a vibrant element to the Michigan City landscape, as well as unite and transform the community," LCA executive director Janet Bloch said. "We are thrilled that Hitachi wants to contribute a stunning gift to the city, one that will enhance Mayor Angie's neighborhood beautification plans."
Hitachi has selected East Chicago artist Felix Maldonado to create the mural; and LCA will host a series of public meetings to gather input from local residents regarding what they want the painting to reflect.
“We are proud to give back to the city we have called home for 60 years,” said Hitachi President & CEO Hideki Fujimoto. “Our hope is this mural captures the spirit, energy and resilience of this great community.”
LCA will host a series of public input sessions to allow community members to share their ideas for the mural, which is expected to be completed by August 31.
"Public buy-in for the project is essential to the success of the mural," Bloch said. "We look forward to hearing from our community and sharing with them all the arts activities we've got planned for this summer."
"This mural is more than just a celebration of Sullair’s 60-year legacy – it’s a vibrant symbol of pride, partnership and progress in Michigan City,” Mayor Angie said. I’m grateful to Hitachi and the Lubeznik Center for investing in a project that not only beautifies our boulevard, but also brings our community’s voice and creativity to life."
