On Thursday, December 18th, around 11:00 p.m., Indiana State Police Radio Region 1 Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call of a possible impaired driver traveling northbound on Interstate 65. Trooper Miramontes located a 1996 Chevrolet truck that matched the description on I-65 northbound near the 171 mile marker and stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation.

During the traffic stop, Trooper Miramontes identified the driver as Brooks Johnson, 46, of Brookston, IN, and requested him to exit the vehicle as part of his investigation. Johnson refused to exit the vehicle and resisted officers on scene. Johnson was eventually taken into custody, and a firearm was located on his person. Troopers were assisted at the scene by a West Lafayette K-9, which gave a positive indication to the Chevrolet. A subsequent search of the Chevrolet revealed suspected methamphetamine.

During their investigation, troopers gathered information leading them to believe the driver was under the influence. Johnson was later transported to the Tippecanoe County Jail.

The preliminary weight of the suspected methamphetamine was approximately 1 pound. This will be sent to the Indiana State Police Laboratory for confirmation of weight and substance.

Arrested and preliminary charges:

  • Brooks Johnson, 46, from Brookston, IN

    1. Dealing Methamphetamine – Level 2 Felony
    2. Possession of a Firearm by a Felon – Level 5 Felony
    3. Battery Against a Public Safety Official – Level 6 Felony
    4. Resisting Law Enforcement – Class A Misdemeanor
    5. Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated – Endangerment – Class A Misdemeanor
    6. Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated – Class C Misdemeanor

Trooper Miramontes was assisted by other troopers from the Lafayette Post, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton County Sheriff's Office, and the West Lafayette Police Department.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
