Seven years ago, Jalynn Edwards was navigating the halls of Bishop Noll as a senior about to graduate. This summer, she has officially returned to her alma mater to take on a leadership role as BNI’s new Campus Minister.
For the 2019 graduate, the transition from student to staff member is a reminder of the lessons learned along the way.
"I think the most surreal part is realizing that all of the folks I walked the halls with are adults now, out in the world carrying the lessons we learned at Bishop Noll with us," she said. "It's kind of wild to think that not that long ago I was sitting in those same classrooms, and now I get to come back and be one of the people walking alongside students as they figure out who they are and who God is calling them to be."
Since graduation, Edwards has built a resume rooted in communication, leadership and student advocacy. She earned a bachelor of arts in communication from Marian University in Indianapolis, alongside minors in peace and justice and pastoral leadership.
While at Marian, she participated in both the San Damiano Scholars Program and the 21st Century Scholars Program, while simultaneously serving as Resident Assistant and student body president.
After a stint as a Community Engagement Specialist for WFYI, Indianapolis’ PBS and NPR affiliate, she transitioned to higher education as a student success coach at Marian University. In that role, she guided students through academic, personal and financial hurdles.
"Many of those conversations naturally connected to questions of faith, vocation, and personal growth," she said, noting how beautifully those experiences bridge into her new role at BNI.
Returning to Bishop Noll means stepping into a new dynamic working alongside those who shaped her.
"Many of my teachers taught me things I carry with me every day, so the thought of being able to work alongside some of them is an honor, and I know I will continue to learn from them," she said.
In particular, she credits former BNI Campus Minister, Miss B (Stacia Bolakowski), with shaping her view of ministry. She also points to BNI principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick ’01 as a foundational inspiration.
"Looking back, I think it was our all-school Masses (that impacted me most)," she said. "I remember how Mrs. Pastrick always connected the Gospel to our everyday lives. She was one of my first examples of a strong female leader... to see her lead with strength, compassion, and total faith really helped me to know that I deserve to take up space in this world."
Her immediate goal for campus ministry is centered on connection rather than sweeping changes.
"My first priority is listening, getting to know the students, understanding the culture of Bishop Noll today, and learning how Campus Ministry can meet them where they are," she said. "I want students to see that faith isn't separate from their goals, dreams, or everyday lives."
She encourages students to join her on the journey with an open mind.
"Some of the most meaningful experiences in life happen when we step outside our comfort zones. Be where your feet are, be present... Just show up. I truly believe God meets us in those moments, often in ways we least expect."
