Ballet Chicago presents its Spring Repertory Performance, “Balanchine + Beyond: Fascinatin’ Rhythms,” at 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, May 9, at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph Dr. The dynamic program highlights the extraordinary musical breadth that inspired legendary choreographer George Balanchine, featuring works set to composers ranging from Tchaikovsky to Henry Moreau Gottschalk to Gershwin, along with the return of new choreography by Resident Choreographer Ted Seymour, set to music by Bach and Brahms.
The company celebrates the return of these beloved works from their expansive repertory. Audiences will experience a vibrant evening of classical ballet performed by Ballet Chicago’s acclaimed Studio Company, widely recognized as one of the country’s leading pre-professional training ensembles. The program reflects Ballet Chicago’s distinctive mission: to offer young dancers the rare opportunity to perform major repertory works in a professional theater setting.
All three Balanchine works are presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust and are produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique®, service standards established and provided by the Trust.
This is a rare opportunity for audiences to see these three masterpieces performed by the region’s only school for Balanchine-based training and performance of his choreography.

About Ballet Chicago
As one of Chicago’s premier dance institutions, Ballet Chicago continues to shape the city’s cultural landscape through world-class training and performances rooted in a rich artistic legacy. Co-founded by Daniel Duell and Patricia Blair, Ballet Chicago is dedicated to preparing the next generation of classical artists through rigorous training and performance experience grounded in the Balanchine tradition. Under their leadership, the organization offers comprehensive training across Preparatory, Student, and Pre-Professional divisions, emphasizing both technical excellence and artistic development. Duell, a former principal dancer with New York City Ballet, worked directly with George Balanchine, bringing firsthand knowledge of the choreographer’s style and intent.
Duell and Blair both serve as répétiteurs for The George Balanchine Trust and are entrusted with staging and preserving his works. By special arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust, Ballet Chicago presents Balanchine masterworks, which are performed along with original choreography, creating programs that are both historically rooted and artistically vibrant.
Today, Ballet Chicago continues Balanchine’s legacy by providing young dancers with rare opportunities to perform this demanding repertoire and Chicago audiences the chance to see his masterworks repertoire staged by those who worked closely with Mr. B. himself. Through its commitment to artistic excellence and meaningful training, Ballet Chicago ensures that George Balanchine’s legacy remains a dynamic and vital force in the cultural life of the city.
