Most recently that assistance came in the form of individuals affiliated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) organization. A result of the pandemic the training division was required to make certain adjustments due to social distancing requirements. This meant training for new employees had to be provided through distance learning services. Utilizing Microsoft Teams, various trainers across the state have taken their turn presenting training segments online.
Having guest speakers and a NAMI representative share their knowledge and personal experiences have proven to be invaluable resources related to the topic of mental illness and recovery. None of this training would have been possible without the distance learning technology. All of the Staff Development & Training staff is grateful to NAMI and the volunteers for going the extra distance to provide necessary training.
Prior to the Covid-19 changes, NAMI was a regular in providing services to the East and Central Region's Training sites at the Correctional Training Institute. When distance learning was implemented, SD&T and NAMI worked together to keep trainig of new personnel on track. The two groups collaborated on training and were able to continue providing essential training to the Department's new employees over the third phase of training, all of which was completed from the safety of their homes.
