“Today's verdict is a triumph for truth and a signal of change.

“The IBLC is overwhelmed with relief at the return of the guilty verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin today. We applaud the jury for their diligence in coming to this decision. We applaud the advocates and allies that raised their voices when George Floyd's was silenced.

“This is how the system is supposed to work. One system applied to all people no matter the color of their skin, holding criminals accountable for their actions, no matter the color of their skin. It is our hope that the system will continue to work for all people and that we will not have to scream for justice for months or years every time a Black or brown person is killed.

“This historic decision paves the way forward for our country and our criminal justice system. The future is at our feet, we need only be brave enough to step forward.

“Tonight, we exhale, we rest and we remember George Floyd and the others who are not with us today. Their memories will live on in the hearts of all who fought for and loved them.

“Tomorrow, we continue the fight for justice reform and equality in his name and in the name of all the Black and brown lives taken from us too soon.”
