You Asked, We Answered!
Question: What are dwarf planets? Can you name some?
Answer: The International Astronomical Union (IAU) states that a dwarf planet must meet the following criteria:
1: Is in orbit around the Sun
2: Has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape
3: Has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit
4: Is not a satellite
The idea of a dwarf planet is relatively new, only being first recognized in 2006 by the IAU. At that time, they recognized three dwarf planets:
1. Ceres in the asteroid belt.
2. Pluto
3. Eris, discovered in 2005 beyond the orbit of Pluto and commonly called the 10th planet in media reports at the time.
Since then, two more celestial bodies have been recommended for the list but are not yet formally recognized:
4. Haumea, discovered in 2004 beyond Neptune's orbit.
5. Makemake, discovered in 2005 in the Kupier Belt.
