Lubeznik Center for the Arts Awarded $50,000 in Grants to Enhance Community Through Public Art

Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) has received a grant for $25,000 from the Health Foundation of La Porte to enhance the La Porte, Ind. community through public art. The La Porte Urban Enterprise Association will match the $25,000, one to one, in order for LCA to facilitate two murals this summer.

Through the collaborative process, the goal of the murals is to foster a sense of shared ownership and pride in the community. There is much evidence that murals with public input contribute to the economic and the physical health of a community. These compelling reasons are why LCA is spearheading this project.

The HotSpot Cafe building wall to be painted

One mural will be located on the east wall of the HotSpot Cafe at 602 Lincolnway Ave. and one will be located on the decommissioned fire station at 910 State Street. The content of the artwork will be determined as a result of several public meetings facilitated by LCA with collaboration among the artist, the building owner and the public. In order to accomplish this, the public is invited to join in the process at public meetings. The first two scheduled are for the mural at the HotSpot Cafe.

They will be held on Monday, July 7 at 4 p.m. Central at the HotSpot Cafe and on Monday, July 14 at noon at the La Porte City Hall. The next two meetings for the fire station will be held on July 24 at 5 PM at the LPCPL Exchange classroom and on July 31 at noon at La Porte City Hall. (All times are Central) Everyone is welcome!

"I want to thank the Health Foundation of La Porte and the La Porte Urban Enterprise Association for their generous grant to bring more public art into the city of La Porte, adding to the quality of life for the community," stated Janet Bloch, executive director of LCA.
