The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) will hold a 21-day public comment period on an amendment to the 2026-2030 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The comment period begins on July 2 and ends on July 23, 2026. Amendment #26-08.5 contains 4 projects for Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD), and Amendment #26-08.1 contains 43 projects for INDOT and local municipalities.:

Amendment #26-08.1 contains:
For INDOT – 30 Projects:
- 8 Bridge Maintenance/Rehabilitation Projects
- 6 Bridge Deck Overlays – All new projects
- 2 Various Bridge Maintenance Projects – All new projects (District- wide, undefined scope, and locations)
- 1 New Bridge/Road project (Local Trax) – Add a phase to the current TIP
- 9 Small Structure Repair/Lining/Replacements – 7 new projects; 2 adding additional funds
- 4 Intersection Improvement Projects – All adding additional funds
- 1 Pavement/Roadway Reclamation Project – New Project
- 2 Access Control Management Projects – One new project, one adding additional funds
- 1 Lighting Project – Adding a new phase
- 2 Bicycle/Pedestrian Projects – One new project, one adding additional funds
- 2 Corridor Improvements – Both adding an additional phase
For locally sponsored projects – 13 Projects for the municipalities of Burns Harbor, Cedar Lake, Chesterton, Hammond, La Porte County, Lowell, Merrillville, Michigan City NIRPC (2), Porter County, Schererville, and St. John:
- 4 Trail projects – All adding additional funding
- 7 Other Type projects; (Zero/Low Emission Vehicle Purchase – All new projects
- 1 Pavement Reconstruction/Rehabilitation – Adding additional funds
- 1 Roadway Safety Project – Eliminating
Amendment #26-08.5 includes four projects that are sponsored by NICTD. All are new projects.
NIRPC’s TIP is a short-range financial and spending plan for the utilization of federal transportation funding and for regionally significant projects. These federal funds can be used for highway, transit, and non-motorized transportation projects. NIRPC's TIP includes projects undertaken by municipalities, counties, transit operators, and the State of Indiana. All comments received during the 21-day public comment period will be compiled into a public comment report and responded to. This report will be made available to the public and distributed to the relevant NIRPC committees prior to any action on these items. It is anticipated that action will be taken at the August 4, 2026, meeting of the Transportation Committee, followed by the August 20, 2026, meeting of the NIRPC Commission.
