• Leave copies of your itinerary along with contact numbers with someone at home, so that you can be easily contacted.

• Inform trusted neighbors and the police that you will be gone so that they can help to look after your property. You can let the police department and VIPS know by contacting our Records Division at 219-836-6650 and leaving your name, address, dates you will be away, and if anyone will be checking on the home.

• Stop mail and packages and encourage a neighbor to park in your driveway while you are away.

• Make sure that you use timed and/or motion-detecting lighting while you are away.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or unnecessary credit cards, and also avoid wearing expensive jewelry. Only deal with authorized agents when exchanging money. Consider wearing an carrier for your passport, credit card, and necessary cash/room key inside your waistband to prevent pickpocket incidents. Beware of distraction techniques and keep your children close to you at all times.
